Fiction Vs. Reality: Civil War Edition

We all know what fiction is, it s a story that is not real. However, this does not mean that every fiction is pure invention. A fiction story can be based on a historical event, with real historical people, however the main characters will tend to be fictional. This is called historical fiction. Historical fiction is quite a popular genre. People tend to be interested in historical events, wishing to know what effects it had on a certain matter, how people were affected by this event. However, history books can make the real story a bit dull and that is when historical fiction comes to the rescue. Historical fiction tries to capture the time's mood and spirit as it allows the person who reads or watches it to experience the event through the character's point of view. Historical fiction can be found in all sorts of media like books, television, movies, among others.

The American Civil War was fought between 1861 and 1865. It arose due to the decades of tension between the northern states and southern states. These tensions rose to their highest level with the election of the president Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Months after his election, eleven sourthern states seceded and formed the Confederate States of America. The southerners won numerous victories over the first two years, however, began to lose power after the losses of Gettysburg and Vicksburg. After this, the northern states began to gain control of the southern states and forced them to surrender in April 1865.

All sorts of historical fictions have been created around this time of epic change. Donald McCraig's Jacob's Ladder: A Story of Virginia During the War is one of the countless books that take place during this time. This novel pays attention to white and non-white people of Virginia, telling the story of a white couple who is imprisoned during the war for giving shelter to a runaway slave. This novel details the life of the time and describes the war with great accuracy and detail. The Wolf Pit by Marly Youmans is yet another book dated back to the Civil War and takes place in Virginia. It tells the the story of a Confederate soldier who endures life at Elmira prison camp and of the daughter of a hired-out slave who stuggles to survive loss and degradation. In Tracy Knight's words: "Marly Youmans' third novel is a literary treasure. . . . 'Wolf Pit' is a haunting Civil War novel, poetic and intensely engaging."

Countless of movies of the time have been created as well. Shenadoah, directed by Andrew McLaglen, provides an entirely different perspective of the war as it takes place in the point of view of a Virginian farmer who did not believe in the war and wished no involvement, however his land lied exactly in the middle of the war zone. North and the South, directed by Richard Heffron, is one of the most complete Civil War movies you can watch. Lasting twelve hours, this television mini series covered each issue that the Civil War dealt with. North and the South held an all-star cast which executed greatly the different perspectives of the movie, involving two best friend, one of them being from the north and the other from the south.

Fiction is an extremely helpful way to spread knowledge in an interesting way. The amount of people who actually enjoy reading a history book is quite small, but people who enjoy a good novel or great movie is of huge proportions. Those who do not like reading, can watch a history based movie and be amazed by the effects a certain historical event had. Those who love a good novel can sit back and immerse themselves into the lives of the characters who endure those moments of history that amazes us. You do not need to look into a history book to learn history, just walk into a Barnes & Nobles or to the nearest movie theatre and knowledge will be there to greet you.

Movie Review- Inception

Inception has been a movie that has sparked all kinds of criticism and appraisal from those who have seen it. While some love the intricate story and trying to decipher what is going on, others feel overwhelmed by the different things going on in the story and feel as if they have been watching the movie for ages. Now this is all up to the person's taste in music, if you are into special effects and science fiction, then this is the movie for you. While I thought this was an excellent movie with great actors, mind-blowing special effects, and a storyline that hooks you into the movie from beginning to end, others differ from my opinion. I have heard comments of peole saying that it was too much of a mixture of problems going on, that it felt extremely long, that it was hard to catch up with. I personally loved the plot and the fact the movie mostly occurred during a dream inside a dream inside a dream and so on. For more general information on the movie (don't worry, there won't be any spoilers!) go to this link where you will see a general review on the good and bad of the movie: http://screencrave.com/2010-07-15/inception-movie-review/

Happiest Moment

To describe my happiest moment out of all the great moments I have experienced is impossible. All my happy moments brought me great joy at the given moment they occurred and I cannot choose one as the leading happy memory. However, one of the first happy moments that came up in my mind at first is one that gave me such joy that it is hard to attempt to describe. It was a Friday night, five days before my birthday. My classmates and I went to have dinner to a restaurant called El Churrasco. It was a pretty big deal because it is rare times that nearly the entire grade goes out on a Friday night together. After dinner, we were all going to go to the movies, however, I was not able to watch the movie. I had already bought my ticket and was walking down the dark aisle in search of the room were my movie was going to play. Down the aisle, I heard someone shout my name. It was a friend of mine and she was urging me to go with her and so I did. She grabbed me by the wrist and ran out of the movie theatre and into the restaurant area. I did not understand what was up with her, I thought she was just trying to bother me. She abruptly stopped, a smile from ear to ear plastered on her face. "You made me run here for nothing!" I shouted. She was looking elsewhere and I turned my gaze to where she was looking and I saw someone whom I did not think I was going to be able to see in yet another three months. My boyfriend was there, a huge smile on his face, waiting to see how I would react. He was much tanner than when I last saw him, and seemed taller. I jumped and hugged him and asked him what he was doing here. He had left to a tennis academy three months back and he was not supposed to come back for still another three months. I could not believe he was actually here, I had never imagined he would come. I felt as if in a dream, like I was floating around in a happy cloud, but it was going to burst any moment and I would wake up from this beautiful dream. But this was real. I could actually feel him hug me tight and lift me up. It was one of the happiest moments of my life. A moment of blissful surprise. He stayed for an entire week, one which I attempted to spend the most with him.

2010 LIA MARATHON!

On the evening of October 20th of the year 2010, the students of Lincoln International Academy filed into the school's track field as students from other schools arrived at the school in order to compete in the yearly marathon. There was an air of tension and expectation as each student waited for their turn to run in hopes of winning their category's race. There were tears from the disappointed, and joy from those who rose victoriously, as well as the always-present trips and falls and near faints. The always present element of surprise took shape in Lincoln's Mrs. Anna Valverde who, being six months pregnant, trotted a full run through the track field during the Teachers and Moms run, embodying an excellent example of surpassing obstacles.
